The Metropolitan is filled with masterpieces. From Veronese to Van Gogh, tapestry to Tiffany; we’ll view an inspired collection from this world class museum. We’ll consider what qualities make a “masterpiece” and stand in front of some of the Metropolitan’s very best; making intriguing comparisons and connections along the way.
IMPRESSIONIST PAINTING: JOURNEY TO MODERNISM
Some of the world’s best Impressionist works of art are on view at the Metropolitan; we’ll consider a curated selection spanning 19th century French painting. From Monet to Degas, explore the groundbreaking aesthetic of these “painters of modern life”, and see how Post Impressionists like Van Gogh and Cezanne laid the groundwork for 20th century art.
AMERICAN WING: AESTHETIC INDEPENDENCE
The newly opened American Wing offers some of the world’s finest American sculpture, painting, and decorative arts. We’ll stand in front of grand paintings on a majestic scale and delicate portraits on a miniature scale. From the colorful glasswork of Tiffany to the bold brush work of John Singer Sargent, we’ll follow a narrative that helped shape the American aesthetic.
YOUNG PERSON’S SCAVENGER HUNT
The Metropolitan Museum provides the backdrop for this art scavenger hunt geared towards ages 10-14 years. We’ll follow a trail that highlights paintings, sculptures and artifacts; uncovering intriguing clues along the way. Then we’ll try our hand at making art, with a sketching session in the gallery. It’s fun, interactive and informative: for the young and young at heart.
